Travertine Tiles as Kitchen Backsplashes are Excellent for Any Home
Travertine tiles are great flooring for the bathroom or patio; but that is not the only places where you could place them. If you're renovating your kitchen, consider adding a backsplash made from travertine. These not only improve the overall appeal of your kitchen but also help in improving your home's value. Nowadays, these tiles are some of the premier fixtures in any home. But before you buy your own set of these tiles, be sure to read further for some useful tips.
Finishes
Travertine tiles are available in several types of finishes, including polished, honed, brushed and tumbled. For a grainier look, go for either tumbled or brushed. The former, however, carries more texture and a natural appeal, great for garden paths. For your kitchen, either honed or polished are great selections.
Cost
Before you buy travertine tiles, make sure that what you're buying is from Turkey, which is where most of these tiles are manufactured from. As for the cost, these tiles can start from two dollars up per square foot. There are, however, certain factors than can increase the cost of these tiles, including: rarity of color, location where the tiles are from, size and thickness, pattern and tenderness and coverage.

When buying tiles for your kitchen backsplash, remember to buy a little more than what you intend to. Having some spare tiles in case some of the installed are damaged is handy and can save you time and money. As for the maintenance, be sure to use only specialized cleaning solutions and stay away from generic commercial products.
If already have travertine flooring in your kitchen, you can follow that pattern when installing the tiles as backsplash. Furthermore, you may want to opt for larger-sized tiles to reduce grout lines and cleaning time during maintenance.
Once you bought yourself a set, all you have to do is to install them. These tiles are known to easily break if handled incorrectly. To make sure that your money will not be wasted, hire a professional to the task for you.
Professional travertine tiles installers will guarantee that the surface for the backsplash is flat and even. It's important to watch how the tiles are installed especially when a sealant is being used because these tiles will require sealing every now and then. You can also ask the installer for maintenance tips to ensure that your backsplash will always look new.

Kitchen Design/Remodeling – Tiling Kitchen Backsplash Ideas?
I too have formica laminate on the wall and want to replace it with tile. Since my new countertops are not as thick as the old ones, and there was a metal strip between old countertop and wall laminate, there is now a gap of drywall of approximately 1 inch between the granite countertop and the bottom of the wall laminate. Can I fill this in with something to make the backing surface even, and if so, what can I use? There are several places within this gap where they drywall is damaged from countertop removal, but I believe these areas could be spackled.
Unfortunately before discovering this site, I took advice on an associate at a major home improvement center (Kitchen backsplash Ideas expert), who told me I could not tile over the laminate but that the laminate would pull off easily from the wall. I attempted to pull one piece off and most of the covering on the drywall came off with it. I don’t suppose there is any repair for this other than replacing the drywall? The total size of the area I attempted to pull off is 24 x 36 and about 1/2 of that area still has laminate, which will not come off and the other half has naked dry wall. Luckily for me, this area is separate from my main kitchen area, where the laminate remains intact.
Dry wall is not a suitable surface to adhere ceramic tile too, because the drywall will not hold on to the tile very well. I have suggested to all who ask this question to remove the drywall from the wall all together and install 1/2″ thick BC grade plywood to stick the tile too.
This is done so that you will have a great permanent surface to install your tile too with out any problems in the future.
You can stick ceramic tile to a plastic laminate surface with out problems provided that the laminate is securely stuck to the wall surface. In your case I would finish removing the laminate and the drywall behind it and put up the plywood in it’s place to end any problems with your tile installation and to insure that you will not have problems in the future.
As for the gap you asked about, you can go to your local tile store and find a matching border to install in this gap and on one will know the difference.

‘Kitchen backsplash ideas’
Designing a kitchen is as much a science as it is an art. Knowing the recommended measurements to use when planning the project can make all the difference in the final outcome.
Here are important guidelines for your kitchen design project.
1. For efficiency, the work triangle (the space between the sink, refrigerator, and stove) should measure 26′ or less with no single side longer than 9′, or less than 4′.
2. In kitchens smaller than 150 sq. ft., opt for at least 13′ of base cabinets, 12′ of wall cabinets, and 11′ of countertop. In kitchens which are larger, go with at least 16′ of base cabinets, 15 1/2′ of wall cabinets, and 16 1/2′ of countertop.

Kitchen Design/Remodeling – Kitchen backsplash ideas?
Hi, we are having our kitchen remodeded and I want a backsplash on the wall behind the cooktop. The area is about 84×18 in. Our contractor insists that if I want the wall tiles there, I must have them on all the other wall spaces in the kitchen where there is no cabintery. That will not only be too expensive, but also I dont want that much color in the kitchen(I ve chosen a bright wall tile). Please tell me if I am doing something totally wrong by getting the wall tiles only behind the cooktop
It seems that your contractor does not understand your request. You only need tiles exactly where you want them and no where else. Contractors invent ways to take advantage of customers by telling them exactly what your contractor told you figuring that you would agree with him and go along with what ever he wanted instead of what you want your kitchen to look like. I know because until I retired I was a contractor for many years and to this day I only did what my customer wanted and not what I could do to take advantage of them.
It is your home, your kitchen, and your money paying for this remodeling project. Get it thew way you want or else.
Good luck,

Is there a way to remove a decal design on ceramic tile backsplash in kitchen?
My kitchen has a glossy white ceramic backsplash. Random tiles have a fruit motif scattered around the backsplash-design appears to be some sort of decal that was applied on top of the tile. I would like to update the kitchen and get rid of these fruit motifs. I have tried Goof-Off, soap, Comet and they do not budge. Does anyone have any other ideas without damaging the tiles–I would like to just have the plain white tiles as I do not want to tear out the tile. Thanks for your suggestions!
if its a ceramic tile it probally is not a decal. most tiles are painted with a design and then fired in a kiln. but you can try goof off, acetone, paint thinner, finger nail polish remover.
Kitchen Backspalah Ideas:Kitchen Design/Remodeling – Backsplash?
I’m getting ready to install a travertine backsplash in my new kitchen. I will be installing it over existing drywall. Should I ude white thinset or mastic? Also, some people say seal the tiles befor you start, some say don’t. Any ideas?
ou can use pre mixed white thinset, if you seal the tile before grout it’ll help to clean, and sometimes if are using a dark color grout it can stain the tile, so better is to seal before grout.
Some people (like myself) likes when some of the natural holes on the travertine tiles is filled with the grout, so if you like the look you can fill some with grout.
